In a significant stride towards global recognition, the course of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon has been officially certified by World Athletics. This milestone announcement was made during a press conference held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala on Tuesday.
World Athletics, the global governing body for athletics overseeing various disciplines including track and field, cross country running, and road running, confirmed the marathon’s certification on Wednesday, April 3. The rigorous assessment process, led by Garvin Wright, a top-tier (Grade A) World Athletics route measurer, concluded with the evaluation of the marathon route in Kasese on Sunday, March 24th.
The assessment focused on accurately measuring the marathon route, evaluating its layout, elevation changes, and other factors crucial to the race’s integrity. With categories spanning 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km, the marathon aims to promote healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and athletic excellence.
Notably, the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is now the only Ugandan-run event certified by World Athletics. This certification establishes the marathon as a globally recognized and reputable event, reflecting its adherence to the highest international standards of organization, course measurement, safety, and athlete support.
Andrew Kilonzo, Managing Director of Uganda Breweries, welcomed the development, emphasizing the positive impact of the marathon on the local community and Uganda’s tourism sector.
The marathon, according to a study by Makerere University’s Tourism Research & Development Centre, injected UGX 3.5 billion into Kasese’s economy during the 2023 edition, with 30% of participants visiting Kasese for the first time.
Matilda Babuleka, UBL’s Head of Beer, expressed pride in achieving international standards, highlighting the event’s celebration of healthy living and community engagement.
Julius Nkuraija, the course director, emphasized the unique experience offered by the marathon route, which traverses scenic landmarks such as Queen Elizabeth National Park and the historic Kilembe Mines.
With official certification, the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon now provides athletes worldwide with unparalleled opportunities to compete and set records on a globally recognized course.
The eagerly awaited third edition of the marathon is scheduled for Saturday, August 24th in Kasese, with registration now open on the official marathon website. Supported by sponsors including Standard Chartered Bank, UNDP, and Hima Cement, participants can anticipate an unforgettable experience amidst the natural wonders of the Rwenzori region.
