Police have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which four family members were shot dead and five others seriously injured in a suspected land wrangle in Mayuge.
The Saturday night incident happened at Namutale village, Kabayingire parish, Buwaya sub-county, Mayuge district where the family of Buyinza Mudhasi Isaac 40yrs was attacked by his nephew said to be a UPDF officer killing him and his three children on the spot and critically injuring five family members.
The UPDF soldier who is currently on the run has been identified as Pte Herbertson Birivumbika.
“Preliminary information indicates that the deceased Buyinza and the arrested suspects including his brother Tagoba Patrick, cousin Mudhasi Sharif and his wife Karungi Gracethe have a longstanding land dispute that had been scheduled for court hearing effective next week. It’s alleged that the suspects had threatened the deceased’s family on several occasions and cases had already been registered at police,” Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East Police spokesperson said.
Nandawula identified the deceased as Buyinza Mudhasi Isaac 40yrs the father, his three children Kafuko Elsie 15, Kantono Resty, 13 and Musasizi Nicholas, 6 while the injured include the wife, Jessica Tumujubwa, 35, Viola Kyakuwaire, 30, Harriet Kyozira,14, Isaac Kitibwa, 10 and another family member identified as Maureen.
Police said the two suspects are currently detained at Mayuge CPS and the bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago hospital mortuary for postmortem and the injured are admitted at Mulago and Iganga hospitals undergoing treatment.
“So far cartridges, projectiles, UPDF uniforms and documents belonging to the suspected prime suspect have been recovered and exhibited. Efforts are underway in conjunction with the UPDF to track him for legal action,” Nandawula said.
