Following the official conclusion of the previous board’s term in June of last year, the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) witnessed the swearing-in of its newly appointed members at the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development. These distinguished individuals, approved by the Cabinet, will assume their roles as trustees for the next three years.
The fresh lineup of the UNCC Board of Trustees is led by Prof. Okaka Opio as Chairperson, with singer Phina Mugerwa taking up the Vice Chairperson position. Among the board members are notable figures such as Hannington Bugingo, Lillian Mbabazi, Dr. Richard Komakech, Joseph Mayanja (popularly known as singer Chameleone), Moses Ssali (recognized as singer Bebe Cool), and Juliana Naumo.
The Ministry emphasizes that the selection process for the new board reflects Uganda’s rich cultural heritage and demographic diversity, with a notable inclusion of young voices.

A Glimpse into UNCC’s Legacy and Mandate
Established under the Uganda National Cultural Centre Act of 1959 (later amended in 1965), the UNCC holds a significant position within Uganda’s cultural tapestry, serving as a cornerstone for artistic expression and the preservation of national heritage.
Since its inception on December 2, 1959, the UNCC has been entrusted with various mandates, including the establishment of theaters and cultural centers nationwide, nurturing cultural and artistic endeavors, and providing a home for diverse societies and organizations dedicated to art, culture, and entertainment.
Noteworthy Contributions and Facilities
The late Honourable A.G. Mehta, Mayor of Kampala in 1968, played a pivotal role in supporting the National Theatre and facilitating its early exhibitions, underscoring the importance of cultural patronage within the community.

The UNCC boasts two prominent facilities: the National Theatre and the Nommo Gallery. The National Theatre serves as a dynamic hub for stage performances and cinema screenings, catering to a wide array of artistic expressions. On the other hand, the Nommo Gallery serves as a platform for exhibitions featuring works by both local and international artists, fostering cultural exchange and appreciation.
In addition to these facilities, visitors can indulge in culinary delights at the snack bar, renowned for its authentic African dishes, and explore locally crafted treasures at the Craft Village.
Governance and Management: UNCC Board of Trustees
Guiding the UNCC’s operations is an eight-member Board of Trustees, appointed by the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development. This esteemed body oversees the strategic direction and ensures the effective management of the center’s affairs, playing a crucial role in advancing its mission of cultural enrichment and community engagement.
