Uganda has kicked off Francophonie Month, a celebration dedicated to the French language and Francophone culture, with a lineup of exciting events throughout March. Organized by various stakeholders and spearheaded by the Embassy of France in collaboration with Alliance Française Kampala (AFK) and other partners, the month-long festivities aim to promote cultural exchange and highlight the increasing relevance of French in Uganda.
The official launch took place at Alliance Française Kampala, setting the stage for numerous activities across the country. Speaking at the launch, Cyril Maman, Head of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs at the French Embassy, emphasized that Francophonie is not just about France but about a global community of over 320 million French speakers across five continents.
“Francophonie is more than a language—it is a shared identity. French connects people across cultures, opening doors to global opportunities,” Maman stated.
He noted that as Uganda strengthens ties with Francophone countries, French is becoming an essential skill, especially for young people seeking regional trade, international mobility, and professional growth.
A Month of Engagement and Exchange
The celebrations feature a diverse range of events, bringing together students, educators, artists, and professionals. The activities started on March 1st with Apéro Francophone, a social gathering organized by Alliance Française Kampala to engage different communities.
Some of the key events include:
- March 7: Njogera Française Interschool Competitions – A platform recognizing outstanding students and teachers in French language education.
- March 8-11: Cultural and entertainment activities in schools, organized by the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APFO).
- March 15: Job and Study Fair, connecting Ugandan students with opportunities in Francophone institutions.
- March 22: Francophone Festival at the International French School in Kampala, showcasing food, art, fashion, and music.
- March 27: Francophonie Concert at Alliance Française Kampala, serving as the grand finale of the month’s celebrations.
All events are free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for Ugandans to experience Francophone culture firsthand.
Expanding French Language Education in Uganda
According to Agatha Tumwine, President of the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APFO), Francophonie Month is a crucial time for promoting French language education in the country.
“March is a special month for French speakers worldwide, and Uganda is part of that global community. This celebration allows our students to practice French through interactive activities while fostering cultural appreciation,” she said.
She highlighted the 18 scheduled events, emphasizing their importance in helping students interact with peers from various schools. Given Uganda’s Anglophone background, learning a foreign language can be challenging, but this month provides an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in French through poetry, drama, music, and other artistic expressions.
“Learning a foreign language in an English-speaking country is not always easy. These events give students the confidence to speak and use French in creative ways, which enhances their skills and builds their confidence,” Tumwine added.
As Francophonie Month 2024 unfolds, Uganda continues to strengthen its connection to the global Francophone community, showcasing how language and culture can serve as bridges for collaboration and opportunity.
