The Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) has strongly denounced the recent arrest of Ugandan dancehall musician Fik Gaza in Saudi Arabia.
In a statement released on Thursday morning, UMA expressed deep concern over the reported arrest of Mr. Gaza, a respected member of the association, citing alleged visa irregularities and dress code violations as the basis for his detention.
Fik Gaza, also known as Shafiq Dangote, rose to prominence in 2018 with hit songs like ‘Digida’, ‘Wanika Ebango’, and ‘Omwana Oyo’.
The circumstances surrounding Fik’s arrest remain unclear, although arrests of Ugandans in the Middle East often involve charges related to drug possession, overstaying visas, and fraudulent activities.
UMA called upon Saudi authorities to swiftly address the matter and ensure Fik Gaza’s safe return to Uganda, emphasizing his well-being as a priority.
Sources indicate that Ugandan officials are actively investigating the situation, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs engaging in efforts to verify the details and ascertain if consular services were requested.
UMA urged the Ugandan government, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to intervene immediately by liaising with the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda and the Permanent Mission to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Riyadh to secure Fik Gaza’s release.
Furthermore, UMA appealed to Uganda’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ambassador Ssemuddu, to personally intervene and advocate for Fik Gaza’s rights, emphasizing solidarity with him and his family during this challenging time.
The association called for collaborative efforts among relevant authorities to ensure Fik Gaza’s safe return to Uganda.
