President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today praised educated individuals for their contribution to improving the quality of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The President said this yesterday (Wednesday, March 20th, 2024) at State House Entebbe where he thanked the group of 89 scientists that undertook two months of military training at Sera-Kasenyi Training School last year.
32 people showed their love to join the army out of 89 scientists.
The president also told scientists that over the past years, the army was made for people who didn’t know how to read and write urging that it was one of the main reasons why the former President of Uganda Idi Amin and Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) never succeeded.
Museveni also said he’s been working for over 60 years to help young people change things. He thinks the qualifications and skills of educated people are vital to build a modern army and economy.
He told a story about training 28 people in Mozambique between 1976 and 1978. Only three of them are still alive today. These people helped build a strong army because they trained others.
President Museveni praised scientists who decided to serve the country by joining the army. But he also said they shouldn’t join just because he said so. They should choose for themselves.
He ordered Brig. Gen. Charity Bainababo to find jobs for scientists who don’t want to join the army. He also said he could support their private projects if they’re good.
The President wants scientists to be patriotic and understand the ideas of the National Resistance Movement (NRM). He thinks it’s important for everyone to know how the NRM sees things.
He spoke about how some leaders in the past focused on things like tribe and religion instead of loving Uganda. He believes loving Uganda is crucial for its prosperity.
President Museveni explained that Ugandans need to be modern and make money from things like agriculture and technology to succeed.
Brig. Gen. Charity Bainababo told the President that scientists learned many things during their training. Those who want to continue with military training will get the chance.
The lecture was attended by Eng. Sheeba Kusasira and Lt Col. Frank Mugume. They talked about important things like military law and physical training.
