As the nation prepares for the 2026 general election, the President General of the Democratic Party has issued a stern warning to those who might exploit the party for their own political gain.

Norbert Mao, who also served as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, emphasized the necessity for party members to choose their leaders wisely during the upcoming national elections, and party’s delegates conference.

He highlighted the critical need to recognize committed party members and to follow constitutional protocols as they approach this important event.

Mao pointed out that election seasons often lead to a phenomenon where individuals pursue opportunities solely to advance their personal ambitions.

He made the remarks while addressing journalists at the party’s weekly briefing in Mengo, along Balintumwa road, Rubaga Division today January 7, 2025.

“Every time there is an election season in Uganda, people go shopping to see how they can achieve their political ambitions best. 2025 gives us an opportunity to identify the true believers in our party,” he noted.

He added that only authorized delegates assessed by the credentials committee will take part in the party’s conference.

“This committee determines that you are a delegate based on a proper constitutional procedure,” he stated.

He stressed that all delegates will soon receive formal invitations from the secretary-general’s office.

The party’s constitution mandates that the upcoming conference will feature three representatives from each district, including the chairperson, woman leader, youth leader, and two delegates from every constituency nationwide. Others are members of the National Council, the parliamentary group, and district branch chairpersons will participate.

Mao also emphasized the importance of clearly distinguishing between party members and supporters.

He pointed out that supporters often exhibit enthusiasm and mistakenly believe they are part of the party.

Furthermore, Mao reaffirmed the Democratic Party’s commitment to its core values despite the challenges it faces.

Regarding the relationship with the ruling government, he clarified that the DP maintains its independence and operates under a cooperation agreement with the ruling party, akin to a joint venture between companies.

“DP has not merged with NRM….. Cooperation does not mean abandoning our principles,” he explained.
