Uganda Police have commenced a nationwide manhunt for journalist and blogger Paddy Kitayimbwa, better known as Ray Supasta, following allegations of breaching bail conditions subsequent to his arrest in September 2023. Kitayimbwa was apprehended for the possession of the National Unity Platform’s red beret, an item deemed unlawful by law enforcement, identified as the party’s official insignia.
Despite being released on bail with the condition of monthly reporting to authorities, Kitayimbwa purportedly failed to adhere to these terms, prompting a concerted effort by law enforcement to locate him.
The NUP red beret has emerged as a potent emblem of defiance against the government, frequently resulting in arrests and legal repercussions for its wearers. Authorities have explicitly prohibited its possession, reserving it exclusively for law enforcement personnel.
Kitayimbwa’s alleged violation of bail conditions underscores the simmering tensions surrounding political dissent in Uganda, reigniting discussions on civil liberties and the right to freedom of expression.
Uganda Police are urging individuals with any information on Kitayimbwa’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in his apprehension. Failure to comply with bail conditions is a grave offense under Ugandan law, potentially resulting in heightened legal repercussions for Kitayimbwa upon his eventual capture.
