A group of Muslims have urged the High Court Civil Divison to block the new tenure of the Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje.
The group say that Mubajje has reached the retirement age of 70 years as it is written in the Uganda Muslim Council Constitution and he needs to leave the office.
According to Sheikh Mubajje, he says he was elected for the fifth term and he stands to be the Mufti. The petitioners want the court ruling to challenge his continued stay in office.
Musa Kabega a lawyer for Uganda Muslim Council Constitution and Mubajje says that the reason for the adjournment was that there was no service from all the parties. The application for an interim order and temporary injunction were withdrawn by the applicant. Musa also added that the other two applications, one for the interim and temporary injunction, will come on the 28th of March and the 16th of April 2025.
According to Farooq Kizito Kamulegeye a lawyer for applicants, It was put to the attention of the court that some respondents had not yet filed their reply. When the court interrogated, we informed them that there was an epidemic of service and that all respondents were served through their offices at Uganda Muslim Council Constitution.
He also added that even those who filed their reply were not served legally or in person. They filed their pleadings for our applications at the Uganda Muslim Council Constitution.
Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje has been in office for 24 years since his election in 2000 and he was reelected for his 5th term over the weekend and the court has pushed the matter to April 28th, 2025.
