The Ugandan government has distanced itself from tweets made by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in the past few days.
In one of the tweets, Gen Muhoozi controversially claimed that he could “capture Khartoum” once US President-elect Donald Trump assumed office.
The statement has since sparked outrage in Sudan, with the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemning it as an affront to international law and mutual respect between nations.
On Thursday, Gen Muhoozi called Lt Gen Peter Elwelu a “buffoon” and “completely unworthy” of serving in Uganda’s military.
He has made a couple of other similar tweets which have not augured well with the public.
However, commenting about the tweets, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr.Chris Baryomunsi insisted that Gen Muhoozi’s comments don’t represent government’s positions on the matter he commented about.
“Regarding the comments attributed to Gen Muhoozi, the CDF on DRC and Sudan, those are comments made on social media casually and privately. They are not the official position of the UPDF or Ministry of Defence or the government of Uganda.”
“They should be treated as casual comments and there shouldn’t be any anxiety at all about the comments both within the country and outside Uganda.”
