General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has made a surprise return to X (formerly Twitter) just a week after deactivating his account.
Over yesterday, Gen. Muhoozi, the Chief of Defence Forces, announced his comeback with a simple post: “I’m back,” under his verified handle @mkainerugaba.
His account quickly attracted thousands of new followers. Unverified reports suggest he posted another message before deleting it shortly afterward.
Earlier this year, Gen. Muhoozi had announced his departure from the platform after a decade of active participation, citing the need to focus on his military duties.
His account, which had over a million followers, was deactivated, signaling the end of a significant online presence that began in August 2014.
In his departure message, Muhoozi explained that he was stepping away to prioritize his responsibilities with the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), under the guidance of his faith.
“To all my dear followers, it has been a great whirlwind and rousing journey together on these streets for the last 10 years since 2014.However, the time has now come under the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ to leave and concentrate on His army, the UPDF.”,he wrote
He further reassured his followers that he might return at a later time, stating, “At an appropriate time, when it becomes important and after fulfilling the Almighty God’s immediate assignment to restore everlasting peace and security to all His people in our region, we shall always re-converge.”
Throughout his time on social media, Gen. Muhoozi was known for his bold and often controversial posts.
He stirred international reactions with comments ranging from threats against political rivals and foreign diplomats to musings about his personal life.
His online presence, which sometimes strayed into the bizarre, included provocative remarks such as threatening to expel the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, claiming Uganda could take Nairobi in two weeks, and issuing threats about intervening in Sudan’s unrest.
Muhoozi also frequently targeted National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, which led to widespread discussion.
