As the 2026 Parliamentary elections loom, Bardege-Layibi Division in Gulu City is abuzz with speculation over the potential candidacy of Lieutenant General Charles Otema Awany for the parliamentary seat.
Gen. Otema Awany has been actively engaging with constituents since late 2023, fueling rumors of his interest in running for office.
The division, also known as Gulu West, is currently represented in Parliament by Martin Ojara Mapenduzi from the National Unity Platform.
Although Gen. Otema Awany has not formally declared his candidacy, his frequent interactions with the public have sparked speculation about his political aspirations.
While some sources suggest that Gen. Otema Awany may challenge Mapenduzi, others emphasize that no official announcement has been made regarding his intentions.
In response to the rumors, incumbent MP Mapenduzi expressed concern and called on the UPDF to intervene, alleging that Gen. Otema Awany is masquerading and creating unrest.
“The UPDF should stop him,” Mapenduzi urged, revealing that two individuals associated with Gen. Otema Awany’s camp were arrested for social media abuse against him.
The potential bid of the outspoken UPDF General adds an intriguing dimension to the political landscape of Bardege-Layibi division, given its strategic significance as the location of the UPDF 4th Infantry Division headquarters and Gulu Airfield.
