The passing of former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) activist Sarah Eperu has ignited a heated dispute between the Najjanankumbi and Katonga factions of the party, each striving to take charge of her funeral arrangements.
Amid conflicting assertions regarding the authority to organize the ceremonies, tensions escalated as both factions secured separate funeral service providers.
The FDC Najjanankumbi faction enlisted the services of A Plus Funeral Management, while the Katonga faction opted for Rhino Funeral Services.
Complicating matters further, family members disclosed that Eperu had expressed a desire for Dr. Kiiza Besigye to oversee the arrangements, a sentiment echoed by some Najjanankumbi faction members.
In the midst of escalating tensions, Dr. Besigye stressed the significance of ensuring a dignified farewell for the departed.
“The most important thing is to accord the departed a respectful send-off,” he conveyed to mourners during a vigil held in Ntinda on Wednesday evening.
The discord deepened as the Katonga faction unveiled a program outlining intentions to transport Eperu’s remains to Katonga after the church service, despite objections from family members aligned with the Najjanankumbi group.
Additionally, the Najjanankumbi faction arranged a body-viewing ceremony at their headquarters.
Known for her fearless activism and unwavering commitment to truth-telling, Eperu garnered political prominence by fearlessly championing her causes, whether on the streets or on televised platforms like the Barometer show on NBS Television.
Eperu tragically succumbed to renal complications on Sunday at Life Link Hospital in Kampala.
