A European Union official stirred up a storm on X social media platform by expressing anticipation for an upcoming meeting with Bobi Wine, the president of Uganda’s National Unity Platform party, hailing him as a champion for homosexual rights.
The post, swiftly deleted after gaining traction among Ugandan users, has prompted speculation regarding the motives behind its removal. Some X users speculate that the deletion may have been influenced by Mr. Kyagulanyi himself, fearing a backlash from Ugandans who vehemently oppose homosexuality.
In the now-removed post on his account, David Vidal Sans remarked:
“It is with great honor that I anticipate meeting Uganda’s foremost leader, @HEBobiwine. He not only advocates for human rights but also stands as a staunch supporter of LGBTI+ rights, shedding light on the oppressive realities of his nation in the acclaimed 2024 Oscar-nominated documentary ‘Bobi Wine: The People’s President’.” The screenshot of the deleted post is now circulating across various social media platforms.
It is worth noting that Bobi Wine has been ambiguous about his stance on Uganda’s recent legislation targeting homosexuality, which prohibits the promotion of practices deemed taboo by many in the country.
However, during a recent trip to the UK, he expressed tolerant views towards LGBT practices. He even went so far as to suggest that NUP MPs who endorsed the anti-homosexuality law are aligned with President Museveni’s agenda.
