One of the security guards that was manning the Equity Bank-Soroti branch, together with a supervisor of the security firm, have been arrested by the area police after a failed robbery that occurred at the branch in Soroti city.
According to a source within security that preferred anonymity, the incident took place on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, around 2:00 a.m.
The source reportedly said that five armed robbers accessed the bank’s premises from the next building by using a ladder through the first floor.
“The robbers managed to access the bank building from its neighboring building using a ladder. Unfortunately, when they got into the bank, they failed to access the ground floor that is occupied by the bank,” the source said.
According to the security source, the robbers had planned to access the ground floor through the first one, yet each of the buildings has separate entries and exits.
Eyewitnesses, however, said that the building has two security guards on a daily basis, but only one guard was on duty at the time of the robbery.
The eyewitnesses further noted that the police arrived with a sniffer dog, which led them to Emmanuel Opunau, the security guard in question, who was arrested and is currently under investigation.
Preliminary information indicates that investigations by the police who have managed to access the CCTV footage are underway to establish the suspects.
