Veteran forward Emmanuel Okwi has officially retired from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable career with the Uganda Cranes.
Okwi, 31, has been absent from the national team since June 18, 2023, when Uganda lost 2-1 to Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers.
The experienced attacker bows out with 95 caps and 28 goals for Uganda since making his debut in 2009 under Coach Bobby Williamson. He was part of the Cranes squad at the 2019 AFCON, where he scored against DR Congo and Zimbabwe.
In a heartfelt statement, Okwi reflected on his journey with the national team:
“Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honor.”
He highlighted the upcoming CHAN tournament, which East Africa will host in August, and the AFCON 2027 as a turning point for Ugandan football, urging young talents to step up.
“That is why, having cherished all those memories, I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young football players.”
Okwi was handed the captaincy in 2021 following the retirement of legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango. His leadership and attacking prowess made him one of Uganda’s most influential forwards in recent history.
Currently playing for Kiyovu SC in Rwanda, Okwi has had an illustrious club career, featuring for SC Villa, Simba SC, Young Africans, Etoile du Sahel, SonderjyskE, Al Ittihad, Al Zawra’a, and Erbil SC.
Renowned sports journalist Ismail Kiyonga paid tribute to the departing forward, stating:
“Arguably the most technically gifted forward on the Uganda Cranes in recent times, probably since Hassan Mubiru and David Obua.”
With Okwi’s retirement, Uganda turns to the next generation to carry the mantle as preparations for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 continue.
