Elias Nalukoola Luyimbaazi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, has been declared the winner of the Kawempe North by-election.
The returning officer of Kampala Electoral District, Henry Makabai, announced Nalukoola’s victory, revealing he secured 17,764 votes. Nalukoola’s closest rival, Faridah Nambi of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), garnered 8,593 votes.
The rest of the candidates trailed far behind. Hanifah Karadi Mulerwa (Independent) 381 votes, Engena Stanley (Independent), 22 votes Henry Kasacca Mubiru (Democratic Party), 100 votes, Muhammad Luswa Luwemba 240 votes, Sadat Mukiibi (Forum for Democratic Change – FDC) 239 votes, Ismail Musiitwa (People’s Progressive Party) 39 votes, Muhamood Mutazindwa (Independent) 186 votes, Moses Nsereko (Independent) 32 votes.
The by-election was marred by widespread reports of electoral malpractice and violence which even led to the mainstream media to recall their reporters from the field.
