In Bukoto South, the National Unity Platform (NUP) faces internal turmoil as its elected MP, Dr. Twaha Kagabo, comes under fire from party members demanding the return of his membership card. The cause of the uproar? Dr. Kagabo’s disparaging remarks aimed at NUP and its leader, Bobi Wine, during a recent visit by President Museveni.
The controversy erupted when Dr. Kagabo publicly criticized Bobi Wine during the President’s visit, accusing him of misleading the public and claiming to have severed ties with NUP as a result. Outraged NUP members in Bukoto South found the remarks offensive and expressed disappointment in Dr. Kagabo’s performance as their MP.
Calls for Dr. Kagabo’s resignation swiftly followed, with letters inundating Bobi Wine’s office and signs demanding the return of the NUP card appearing throughout the streets.
However, Dr. Kagabo downplayed the situation, dismissing calls to return the card by likening it to a “rental” with an expiry date in May 2025. He asserted his right to retain the card until then, even suggesting he could “rub it in the dust” if he chose.
Despite his seemingly nonchalant response, Dr. Kagabo hinted at potential reconciliation by suggesting he might eventually return the card.
Nevertheless, tensions persist as NUP members remain steadfast in their demands, while Dr. Kagabo clings to his stance. This clash threatens NUP’s hold on Bukoto South, casting uncertainty on the party’s future in the constituency. Only time will reveal whether Dr. Kagabo fulfills his vague promise and how this power struggle unfolds.
