In a heart-wrenching incident on Wednesday morning, a devastating accident occurred at a traffic intersection along the Entebbe-Kampala highway, resulting in the loss of life of Raphael Okiot, the husband of Kyenjojo Grade I Magistrate, Ms. Faith Irene Kwagala.
Confirming the tragic news in a brief obituary, Magistrate Kwagala expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her husband and announced that funeral arrangements would be communicated later.
Initial fears arose that the vehicle crushed by a concrete mixer truck, a Mitsubishi Galant Fortis, might have contained a family. However, Magistrate Kwagala’s announcement appears to have allayed these concerns.
The fatal incident unfolded when Mr. Okiot stopped his sedan vehicle, registered as UBQ 371P, at the Nkumba University traffic intersection. Tragically, a concrete mixer truck, registered as UAN 836B, appeared to lose its brakes while descending downhill.
Despite not speeding, CCTV footage revealed the truck driver’s attempt to avoid colliding with Mr. Okiot’s Galant Fortis by veering onto the right island. However, this maneuver proved futile as the truck ultimately struck the roadside barrier, causing it to overturn and crush the Mitsubishi vehicle.
It took over an hour for police and Special Forces Command agents to deploy a tow truck and extract the concrete mixer from the wreckage, which had severely damaged the Mitsubishi.
As of now, authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash.
Late Mr. Okiot, a lawyer by profession, had been serving as a teaching assistant at Uganda Christian University’s Law School in Mukono, his alma mater.
