School proprietors emphasize that technology has not only revolutionized learning but has also become a catalyst for extensive research, particularly benefiting underserved communities. The impact of digital inclusion in African schools is evident, creating numerous opportunities for students and educators alike.
Sr. Abiyo Rebecca, the headmistress of St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls School, a beneficiary of Airtel Africa’s partnership with UNICEF to advance digital learning across the continent, shares her insights. She states, “Technology is playing a crucial role in bridging the digital gap. Students now conduct research, filling gaps in classroom knowledge. Our recent success in the Climate Change debate is a testament to this. I am deeply moved by our mission to impart skills, knowledge, values, and to transform the attitudes of young girls, making a meaningful difference.”
Charity R. Bukenya, Airtel Uganda’s CSR Manager, expresses her enthusiasm about the collaboration with UNICEF. She states, “Our partnership with UNICEF accelerates the digital inclusion agenda, not only in education but also in sectors like health. We are connecting communities through technology services, relying on 4G Wi-Fi connectivity in selected schools across Uganda. Our goal is to connect 100 schools and provide computers within the next two years.”
Bukenya further adds, “We are delighted to hear that the donation of computers and the setup of internet facilities have been embraced by students and teachers. This embrace of digital learning has significantly impacted academic outcomes. Our passion lies in empowering students and fostering an environment where they can thrive academically. Extending these services to St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls School reaffirms our commitment to this promise.”
This collaborative effort involving educational institutions, government bodies, and various stakeholders is paving the way for a transformed education sector in Uganda. It ensures that every learner, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to access and benefit from the digital advancements in education.
