A new girl group, Warafiki, has emerged in the music industry, consisting of Tori (Victoria Mbabazi), Eyla (Damalie Nalugwa), and Treezy (Patricia Debra Nakalembe).
Signed to Steve Jean’s Fenon Records, the trio is already making a name for itself.
However, their arrival has been criticised strongly, particularly from singer Cindy Sanyu.
Cindy, a member of the iconic girl group Blu*3, which was also created by Steve Jean, has openly criticized Warafiki.
She accused the group of imitating the old Blu*3 and even stated that if she were managing them, she would trash their recorded music, claiming it appeals to the 2006-2008 audience.
She also criticized their branding and dress code, calling it old-fashioned and outdated.
In response, Tori pointed to their song “Tetubafana,” which translates to “We do not resemble them,” as a direct response to Cindy’s claims.
She encouraged listeners to interpret the song however they wished.
Treezy further clarified that Warafiki initially started as a four-member group, but one member left due to unforeseen circumstances, leaving them as a trio.
She emphasized that they are not trying to replicate anyone, explaining that their inspiration comes from completely different sources.
She specifically cited the British girl group Flo as their major influence.
Addressing Cindy’s criticism of their dress code, Eyla dismissed the notion that they should draw branding inspiration from Ugandan artists like Ava Peace and Winnie Wa Mummy.
While they respect and like how these artists dress, she explained that Warafiki looks up to global icons like Beyoncé and Rihanna for style and fashion.
In conclusion, the trio made it clear that they are not concerned with Cindy’s remarks or any other criticism, as such comments do not impact their lives or careers.
