The president of National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has blasted the government for jailing a TikToker for up to six years for abusing President Museveni, his wife and son on social media.
“Unless otherwise, this young man a TikToker is set to spend six years in detention for ‘insulting’ Gen. Museveni, his wife, and son. The same Museveni who regularly insults those who disagree with him calling them idiots and swine. The same Museveni who looks on as his apologists insult, ridicule, and disparage those who oppose his rule,” Kyagulanyi posted on his social media accounts.
On Wednesday, the Chief Magistrates Court in Entebbe sentenced 24-year-old Edward Awebwa to six years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to abusing the president and members of the first family in a video posted on TikTok.
The trial magistrate said whereas Awebwa had pleaded guilty, the punishment was meant to serve as a lesson to youths who use social media to hurl insults at leaders.
However, according to Kyagulanyi, jailing TikToker for six years showed double standards as many supporting the current government are fond of abusing others and nothing is done to them.
He said, on the contrary, regime critics are handed with an iron fist in case of anything.
