During her recent inspection of Namboole Stadium, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among issued a directive for the immediate removal of vehicles belonging to Pioneer Easy Bus Limited from the stadium premises.
Among emphasized that the land surrounding Namboole Stadium should be solely dedicated to sporting activities, emphasizing the need to restore the stadium’s reputation and aesthetic appeal.
Pioneer Easy Bus Limited, a privately-owned public transport company, has been utilizing parts of the stadium’s parking area for over a decade, converting it into a makeshift storage space for their decommissioned fleet of Chinese-made buses.
However, the ongoing renovation of Namboole Stadium to meet international standards has highlighted the inconvenience caused by the presence of these buses on the premises.
Expressing her concerns about the use of the stadium’s land, Among called for a thorough investigation into the leasing agreement with Pioneer Easy Bus Limited and demanded transparency regarding the revenue generated for the government from this arrangement.
“The land allocated to the stadium should be reserved exclusively for sporting purposes, and any other usage should be subject to proper resolution,” stated Among.
The renovation project, which commenced in August 2022 with a budget of Shs97 billion, is progressing well and is expected to be completed by May 25th, 2024, according to Project Engineer Peter Seku. Parliament has urged Finance Minister Amos Lugolobi to release the remaining funds to ensure the timely completion of the project.
