A split may happen in Uganda’s opposition party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). The Katonga group, led by FDC founder Kizza Besigye, plans to start a new political party.
Katonga Gets Ready:
Katonga is getting ready by organizing people across the country to join the new party. They aim to attract loyal followers of Besigye. They plan to launch the party in May 2024.
Najjanakumbi Not Worried:
The rival Najjanakumbi group, led by Patrick Amuriat, isn’t bothered by Katonga’s plans. They think it’s just an effort to get back members who are unhappy. They say it won’t affect them much.
They believe they are the real FDC and are sure they won’t lose members.
The Besigye Factor:
Katonga hopes to attract people because of Besigye’s popularity. They think his support will bring loyal followers to their new party.
Biriggwa Ssemujju Nganda, a leader in Katonga, says their group represents the true FDC with Besigye as its center.
What’s Next?
We’ll have to see how successful Katonga is in getting new members and what effect it has on the opposition. If FDC splits, it might weaken the opposition against the ruling party.
Looking Ahead to May 2024:
Uganda’s political scene could change a lot by May. We’ll keep watching to see if a new opposition party emerges and what happens with FDC.
