NUP have shown their dissatisfaction with Buganda Deputy Commissioner for Central Mathias Mpuuga’s refusal to leave office even if the party had asked him.
The party says that Mpuuga’s decision is being funded by the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among whom they accuse of corruption and abuse of the power of office.
The party restated its view on the recent controversy over funds given to Mpuuga, a former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
NUP claims Among influenced opposition leaders to support President Museveni. They say she led a meeting where 500 million shillings were wrongly given to Mpuuga.
“NUP expected Among to defend him, as she has in the past,” said the party, suspecting corruption in the commission.
They had three goals: to reject corruption, support Francis Zaake as their rep on the commission, and distance themselves from future accusations.
“Hon. Mpuuga no longer represents us on the Parliamentary Commission,” the party firmly stated.
Among, a letter dated March 25, 2024, referred to the law, saying parties can only nominate candidates for the commissioner’s position. She cited the Administration of Parliament Act and Parliament’s Rules of Procedure.
“Following your request would interfere with Parliament’s authority,” Among’s letter explained.
Mpuuga criticized NUP for ignoring important issues like Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s appointment as Chief of Defence Forces and the reappointment of Electoral Commissioners linked to election issues.
“Gen Museveni is pushing his dynasty plan, even appointing his son in key military roles. The main opposition seems lost and can’t lead its supporters,” Mpuuga expressed his frustration.
