A devastating accident on the Kampala-Jinja highway claimed the life of a 54-year-old Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Major, identified as Nsamba Habib Katakabire. The fatal collision occurred near the new picnic site in Mabira, Buikwe District, at approximately 1 p.m. on Friday.
Reports from Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, indicate that Major Nsamba was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number UBQ 424N. In an attempt to overtake multiple vehicles, he collided head-on with a Howo Trailer registered as UBP 644S/UBP 770N. The impact caused his vehicle to roll over and strike a Toyota Corona Premio.
Tragically, both Muhammad Kasozi, the Howo Trailer driver, and one of the occupants of the Toyota Corona Premio lost their lives instantly. However, PC Isaac Kayondo, the other occupant of the Toyota Corona Premio and a police officer from Bweyogerere, sustained injuries and was promptly rushed to Kawolo Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations, while the wreckage of the vehicles involved was towed to Mabira police station for further investigation.
Authorities attributed the cause of the accident to Major Nsamba’s reckless overtaking. This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers of careless driving on our roads.
Just a day prior, another fatal accident occurred in Mpigi, claiming the lives of three individuals. In this separate incident, a collision between a Mitsubishi Fuso and a Subaru Forester resulted in multiple fatalities, underscoring the ongoing need for road safety awareness and vigilance.
